Fashion Goes Goth
by The Fashion Cult
You could argue that popular trends in fashion are steered by the whims of designers and magazines. This is inevitably true. Still, it’s true that movements if fashion, as in other arts, are inspired by the populace. Art imitates life imitates art. And so it goes that the spirit that brought jet black and blood red to their current front row status in fashion has shown itself in all of pop culture.
Bands like Evanescence have brought a darker edge to pop music – with their sound and their look. The band is sometimes characterized as gothic rock or nu metal, but with frontwoman Amy Lee’s sweet voice, the band can hardly be called real metal. But check out a pop band like Breaking Benjamin and you may get surprised with a guttral scream or two.
And what’s more pop than supermodels. Versace harnessed the power of these cover girls to promote the all-black look in their fall/winter ads.
Certainly, goth was found all over the fall runways. Even some spring lines are leaning toward the darkside.

Givenchy has a newer world take on the goth look,
and Balenciaga does futuristic goth.
With the blitz of music, magazine and runway influences goth is showing up everywhere. Which hollywood starlet hasn’t been seen sporting black fingernails. Even the ones that are supposed to be all sugar and spice.
Talk about costuming!
Of course the trends filter down to us common consumers. Here are a few ways to get a touch of goth shopping at the mall.
Betsey Johnson spider pin, $50
Betsey Johnson cuff wristwatch, $275
BCBG Girls corset-like camisole, $88
Even at Target, this burnish silver bracelet, $16.99

Yeah, fashion is going goth, but just because it’s “popular” doesn’t mean we goths need you “followers of fashion” to be cluttering up our stores. Forget what’s popular. If you like dark colors, fine, but if you are doing it just because “everyone else is”, then what does that say about you? There are enough posers as it is, don’t be one of them!
touche, anonymous. but i hardly think you can worry about hordes of “followers of fashion” turning up at your Death & Doom conventions, or whatever it is you feel the need to so preciously guard. Most trendy types will simply partake in a black ring or fingernails (which i hate).
ultimately, it’s about a mood that’s stirring. it’s not just about clothing; it’s nearly palpable and, yes, it touches EVERYONE – fashion follower or not.
i’m so please to have captured your attention, however momentary. please return and leave your opinions on some other topics. you may be interesting in the following

Hey! I love your site but I’m having issues getting it to render right in the Nautilus browser. You might want to recheck your stylesheets. Thanks!
